Extracellular vesicles

The generic term extracellular vesicles (EVs) includes various subtypes of cell-secreted, sub-micron, lipid bilayer structures that cannot replicate. During EV release many biologically active molecules such as enzymes, cytokines, bioactive lipids, proteins, mRNAs and noncoding RNAs are packaged into these vesicles. Fusion of EVs with host cells permits transfer of genetic information that modulates the cellular activities of recipient cells. Consequently, EVs are increasingly recognised as a means of intercellular communication.
