A new study conducted in Kufa University- Faculty of Pharmacy illustrating the effect of COVID-19 on the pattern of the reported adverse drug reactions of the antibiotics being used in the Iraqi hospitals.The study used reports supported by the Iraqi pharmacovigilance center in the ministry of health and it was between the period before and after 6 months form the first reported COVID-19 case which was in February 2020.
The study included more than 2000 spontaneous reports sent to the center from the pharmacovigilance officers in the health districts across the country and the results showed a change in the age group reported after the pandemic into the adult which may be explained by the act of the increased adults hospitalized compared to children at the pandemic time, there were significant changes in the genders reported, changes in the adverse reactions reported from cutaneous reaction caused mainly by Ceftriaxone before the pandemic to the gastrointestinal problem after the pandemic which might be attributed to the increased use of Azithromycin and finally, there were a significant change in the seriousness of the reported cases after the COVID-19 which reflects the importance of a more deep dive in this field to avoid these health hazards and decrease the cost of patient treatment on the health system.
