University of Kufa, faculty of pharmacy discussed the master thesis title “Evaluation of nephroprotective effect of resveratrol and erythropoietin in renal ischemia/reperfusion injury in adult male rats”
The purpose of this study was to determine whether resveratrol and erythropoietin have a nephroprotective effect following renal ischemia and reperfusion injury in adult male rats.
The study found that the resveratrol, erythropoietin-treated groups showed a significant decrease in serum creatinine and urea, IL-1β, NF-kB, and renal tissue Caspase-3 levels and a significant increase in SOD, GSH, and Bcl-2 levels. Analysis of renal tubular injury by histopathology revealed that treated groups had significantly less damage than the induced and vehicle groups.
The researcher recommended further testing on these compounds.
In summary Overall, the data suggest that resveratrol and erythropoietin’s pleiotropic effects as antioxidant by increasing antioxidant markers SOD, GSH, anti-inflammatory by reducing inflammatory markers IL-1β, NF-kB, anti- apoptotic activity by decreasing apoptotic marker Caspase-3 and increasing antiapoptotic marker Bcl-2, and ameliorating histopathological changes, significantly mitigate renal ischemia/reperfusion injury in rats.
