On Thursday May 27, 2021, Department of Pharmacognosy and Medicinal Plants held a seminar under the title (Mucormycosis: The ‘black fungus’) given by Prof. Dr. Meison Abdulbary Abdullah, during which she addressed an introductory briefing on this disease and the cause of it from the fungi of the mucoraceae family, which is commonly found in soil, manure, decomposing fruits and vegetables, and spreads its spores in the air and dust of homes, dirty carpets, and ventilation ducts.
The fungus affects the sinuses, brain, and lungs, and can threaten the lives of people with diabetes or severe immunodeficiency, and cause various rare diseases depending on the way the spores enter the body. The treatment requires scraping and removing the dead tissue (removing the nose, eyes, or even the patient’s jaw to prevent the fungus from reaching the brain).
It is believed that the link between the spread of “black fungus” and infection with Covid-19 is the use of steroid compounds in the treatment of critical cases of Corona infection, which weaken immunity and increase blood sugar, making treatment recipients more vulnerable to infection with the black fungus, but Corona is not the only disease that weakens The body’s immunity, so the black fungus and other fungi don’t just target people with Covid-19.
To prevent fungus, you should wear face masks in dusty areas, and protect the skin, feet and hands when exposed to soil ormanure such as gardening or some outdoor work
